We understand that many people find attending the dentist a stressful experience and for those who are very nervous or phobic we can offer Conscious Sedation to allow them to receive the care that they need.
WHAT IS CONSCIOUS SEDATION?
Intravenous sedation involves the careful and controlled administration of a muscle relaxant which allows the patient to gradually reach a relaxed state where they are still awake and aware of what is happening. Treatment that they would not normally tolerate can proceed without them being anxious. As trust grows within the practice, we hope that the patient can progress to having future treatment without the need for sedation.
WHO IS SEDATION SUITABLE FOR?
Intravenous sedation is suitable for adult phobic patients and adult patients with particular problems such as a severe gag reflex. This is because it allows relaxation and allows the patient to disassociate from what is happening.
HOW DOES THE PRACTICE DELIVER SEDATION?
If sedation is required, this is discussed with our sedation team (Elaine Winter and Fiona Murray) who have both undertaken additional training. The dedicated assessment visit will ensure that all options are explained and made available. We then give all the appropriate information to enable the patient to make an informed decision.
Once the patient is happy to proceed with treatment under sedation, appointments are arranged at a mutually convenient time for the patient, the person who will escort them and the practice.
We hope that our professional and friendly team help make the journey through our practice as relaxed an experience as possible.
